Dear Parents & Caregivers,
Over the next few months, we will be publishing an informative series of articles in the school newsletter, written by renowned Australian Child Psychologist, Michael Hawton.
Michael (a former teacher himself) has spoken with hundreds of school leaders nationwide through a range of ‘Tough Conversations’ workshops. Based on his close work in the education sector (for many decades), Michael believes that today, far more parents are prematurely intervening to fix a problem on their child’s behalf than was the case a generation ago.
Over the next six newsletters, we will be exploring how intervening to fix a reported wrong-doing to a child (and potentially becoming frustrated with school staff) may be:
- Reducing a child’s ability to resolve problems independently.
- Unintentionally causing parents more worry than is reasonable.
- Exacerbating a negative societal misperception about how much trust we can place in education professionals charged with the care of our children.
We hope you enjoy the upcoming series and welcome any feedback you may have.
